Operating at the frontlines of climate change in Bangladesh — the Barishal Unit addresses the urgent realities of sea-level rise, cyclones, riverbank erosion, and coastal flooding in one of Asia's most climate-vulnerable regions.
Where the river meets the sea — and where climate justice matters most.
The Renew Earth Barishal Unit is located in Barishal District, part of the Barishal Division — one of Bangladesh's most climate-exposed coastal regions. Established in 2024, this chapter directly addresses the devastating impacts of climate change on communities living in the low-lying char-belt and coastal areas of southern Bangladesh.
Barishal and its surrounding districts face compounding climate threats: cyclones from the Bay of Bengal, seasonal flooding, riverbank erosion, tidal surge, and increasingly severe salinity intrusion into farmland and freshwater sources. These threats directly impact livelihoods, agriculture, and community stability.
The chapter works with local communities, schools, and NGOs to build climate resilience, advocate for policy change, and empower youth in one of Bangladesh's most vulnerable — yet underrepresented — regions in the national climate conversation.
Barishal sits at the intersection of multiple climate crises — making it one of the most critical chapters in our network.
Barishal faces direct hits from Bay of Bengal cyclones, threatening thousands of coastal families each season.
Sea-level rise and tidal surge events are destroying farmland, contaminating freshwater, and displacing communities.
Riverbank erosion is swallowing homes and farmland, forcing thousands of families to relocate each year.
Rising salinity is making once-fertile agricultural land unproductive, threatening food security for millions.
Meet the dedicated leaders of the Barishal Unit driving climate action at the local level.

Rapid relief operations during cyclones and floods — distributing emergency supplies, coordinating evacuations, and supporting affected families in coastal and char-belt areas of Barishal.
Community training programs on cyclone preparedness, early warning system awareness, and evacuation planning — equipping coastal communities to respond before disaster strikes.
Door-to-door outreach, community meetings, and school programs across Barishal district to educate communities about climate change, its local impacts, and what they can do.
Coastal afforestation drives — planting mangroves and other native trees along riverbanks and coastal belts to reduce erosion, protect coastlines, and restore biodiversity.
Voicing the concerns of Barishal's coastal communities in national climate dialogues — demanding fair representation of frontline communities in Bangladesh's climate policies.
Building coalitions with local NGOs, community organizations, and government bodies to scale up climate resilience solutions across Barishal Division.
